Even though the techno music scene is like a little world to itself, we too are not immune to the external factors.
What motivated this post is definitely the current situation in the Middle East and how it affects the music scene. We witness a lot of DJs with big platforms taking sides, not necessarily taking sides but (professionally, they would say) “bringing awareness to the masses of the crimes that are happening”.
Fighting for a better tomorrow, for a better civilisation, for love, kindness, acceptance, fairness... are things that we need more among us weird humanoids.
Unfortunately, what I see is this "fight" reflects more negatively on the scene and creates in some cases unnecessary conflicts. One example happened recently, including a well-known music platform HÖR and a few artists who decided to use their play time in front of cameras to highlight their political points of view. Oh yeah, and to maybe represent some of their music.
Detailed story 👉 HÖR issues statement following online backlash and calls for boycott.
In incidents like this one, we notice obvious negativity that spreads across the scene.
⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️ We witness now just like we witnessed more than a year ago in the Russia-Ukraine situation⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
HOW on behalf of happenings in one part of the world, injustice was pushed all over. We witnessed one nationality being practically "praised" by the public also how this one nationality suddenly got all sorts of opportunities, from gigs to podcasts, magazine posts, event venues...
Yet at the same time, the world really showed its kindness by discriminating, segregating, excluding and attacking another nationality. The scene got through the certain pressure that was being created and pushed on all artists, all people who were and still are active on the scene to publicly declare their opinions or even feelings on the happening events. There was one opinion accepted by the majority and only that one was also expected from others in the community. The first few months after the beginning of the unfortunate situation mentioned above, the whole scene acted disgusting. It seemed more like the new popular trend is around and you are being judged, some even bullied if you are not part of it. The whole trend got to a point where gigs and business deals are being cancelled based on points like - if you publicly support and stand for one side and trash the other side.
Certain characters float out on the surface who use situations like that to build their careers on it. Using the situation in their favour to be the loudest in practicing that trendy opinion that the masses want to hear.
All that leads me further into the question that is discussed a lot in the community. The one that is mostly brought up when huge inhuman events happen in the world.
Is the techno music scene and its community in a way connected with politics?
Are partygoers engaged in political subjects or are they just a high bunch only interested in partying?
What does history teach; where are the beginnings of the whole movement at and what are the ambitions behind it?
Yes, for a lot of partygoers, techno music is just related to dance, fun, time spent with friends, youth. What is also a great purpose of existing.
That brings us to divided opinions in the community.
Some argue that music is a part of life which is meant to provide you with joy and happiness. Therefore, events are places where you usually go to get away from the seriousness and roughness of everyday life. But it also means a place without arguments, fights, negative discussions - that is why politics exist in society, that's her role.
Then you can always come across people in the community who take the background of techno movement seriously.
Nice words said by the important figures at the beginning and creation of the movement ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
👉 The birth of a genre inspired by one city's culture.
I personally find both points of view important.
What concerns me, after different posts, statements, allegations I witnessed from different people in the community, is that this political part has been taken out of the contest.
There are very public social platforms (owned by individual commercial names but also online portals..) where political subjects are being discussed by influential people from the electronic music community.
Unfortunately, that way, the dance music community, which constantly grows and is being flooded with new fresh open minds, is also being misguided. The community influences its own members negatively or encourages divides and arguments. By practicing those kinds of behaviour, we are nothing more than just another system's pawns. The community, who like to think of itself as a resistance. - Ironically. 😟😟😟
The big exposed to the world also brought rotten characters with no interest on respecting and sharing our values. So, it is important that we also work effectively and educate further - not to lose humbleness, love and passion for music, underground sound and the touch of it, not to let materialism take over.
The most important - not to let others control your mind.
The movement was from the beginning politically conscious but never with the goal of subjecting to something that it is strongly against. The whole idea is to gather and find people who can think beyond the system, who can strongly resist their manipulation and control.
The techno movement and resistance fight for a different world against the whole system and its self-oriented made-up politics.
